Hallways

Entrance halls and internal halls are another great place to bring natural light into the home through skylights, solar tube lighting or well-placed clerestory windows.

To provide evening lighting there are several options. Standard ambient type lighting through the use of ceiling mounted fittings, pendant fixtures or wall sconces can provide good lighting for these spaces. LED panel lighting is also a good option as it gives an even light and when using neutral white LED can look like a skylight.

Alternatively, low level recessed LED lighting or recessed LED strip lighting can provide a soft glow for general lighting. Movement sensors can be installed for spaces intermittently used to assist with night time visibility and provide a sense of security for the home.

Stairs

Areas where steps and stairs are located should always be well lit to reduce the risk of tripping and falls. Efficient options include LED strips along the tread of the step or recessed along the wall. Installing sensor lights (that sense movement and daylight) will activate stair lighting as necessary when someone approaches the stairs.

Decorative pendant type lighting also works well placed above stairs at the centre point or at the landing depending on the style of the staircase. Wall mounted lighting in combination with tread lighting is an additional option. The type of lighting used should suit the intended use of the occupants and provide a safe stairwell.

Bedrooms

Using energy efficient ceiling or wall ambient lighting to provide general illumination, including a dimmer provides additional flexibility to suit moods.

Tasks lamps are ideal for those who like reading in bed. These can either be freestanding on bedside tables, fixed to the wall above the bed or wall mounted beside the bed. Bedside lamps are available in many styles including pendant, adjustable or fixed. Bedroom furniture heights and locations should be considered at the electrical rough in stage to ensure fittings function properly with selected furniture.

Home office

The home office needs to provide quality lighting for productivity, especially in the workspace. Bad lighting here can cause eye strain, headaches and reduce productivity. Australian standards for an office specify between 240 and 320 lux at the desktop.

There are free smart phone apps available that can provide reasonably accurate lux readings using a phone. Search for lux meter and download the one that appeals to you.

Use ambient lighting to light the space generally (when natural light is not available).

Task lighting should be used when working, especially in zones with computers, filing cabinets and other intensive tasks. When choosing task lighting for the office consider the tasks undertaken and positioning to avoid glare, reflections and shadowing. If light is coming from behind you it’s likely to cause reflection and glare on your computer screen.

Lamps that are adjustable and can be moved provide flexible light for a variety of tasks.
